In memory of Gerry Kennedy
1948 - 2019
In the early 1970's, Gerry was breeding and showing Arabian Horses and raising birds as a hobby. It was know as Kennedy Aviaries. By the late 1980's the horses were gone, and the aviaries and birds more than filled the void the horses left behind. Gerry and Dee met when she went to see his Rose Breasted Cockatoo named Hoppie. Their love for birds brought them together and their passion for birds is what guided from that point on. Soon they were blessed with little bird baby voices and sweet feathered faces. They wanted to keep them all! They eventually agreed that it wasn't fair to keep all of the babies for themselves; babies thrive with their own special someone to adore and care for them. At first, the slight monetary gain from selling their precious babies put very little dent into the cost of food and shelter for the birds, but as bird lovers, you know that every little bit helps. They used the income to… you guessed it, buy more birds. Their collective love of birds and Gerry's undying devotion to their care gave them the courage to take Gerry's hobby more seriously. Their collection grew and their reputation for having sweet babies brought in more families for their wonderful babies. Together, they decided to take the risk and retire from their normal careers to concentrate their energies on their beloved pets.
Gerry passed away in the fall of 2019 and Dee started to wind down the business in preparation for retirement. In the summer of 2022, and with Dee's generous blessing, Phoenix Feathers acquired AZ Parrots. Dee has fully retired and left the state of Arizona to spend time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
